The Genesis Series
Creation and the Beginning
TEXT: Genesis 1:1
INTRODUCTION:
Humanism, situational ethics, homosexuality, abortion, euthanasia, racism.
What do all of these things have in common besides their opposition to Christianity? Do you know? The answer is this: they all have their roots in evolution. The teaching and acceptance of evolution has brought our culture to its knees – not in worship of almighty God, but in worship of almighty “man” for climbing out of the primordial soup and evolving into what “he” is today and what “he” is to become.
The acceptance of evolution has caused the foundation upon which this country was built to crumble. Do we idly sit by and be tolerant of other’s views, or do we go on a political rampage to root out this destructive theory? The answer does not lie in either of these extremes. To tolerate some things is essentially to accept them. To go on a political rampage implies that the government become more involved and can solve the problem – and I really do not think we want that.
I believe that Christians should be made aware of the facts, especially with regards to Creation. This, in turn, should be passed down from generation to generation instead of allowing the public school system and popular culture to indoctrinate our children. They need more than just the pointless answers we give them sometimes such as, “this is true because that is just the way it is” or “this is true because that is what I have always been taught.”
Every Christian should be able to open the Bible to Genesis one and explain the truth about God almighty and His creative acts. The purpose of this sermon is not to present various and assundry scientific facts about creation, but to explore what the very beginning of God’s Word has to say about the truth of creation.
I. God exists (v. 1)
A. The Bible does not begin by trying to prove God’s existence.
1. It is an assertion
2. It is logical
* When I look at the present order of things in the world, I cannot help but think that there must be a designer. All that is in the earth could not have risen out of primordial soup. By looking at this pulpit, I might wonder how it got there. The logical conclusion would be that someone put it there. It would be illogical to think that over the process of millions of years, the pulpit formed itself into what I see today. Therefore, the only logical consideration for the question, “How did I get here?” is that everything came from someone or something. Since nothing comes from something, it must have come from someone. Since this some created everything that is, this someone must be all-powerful.
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Since there is someone who is all-powerful, does this someone choose to remain anonymous? Do I have a responsibility to this someone? The logical conclusion is that I must6. Otherwise, why did this someone create everything, including the human race? I believe that this someone has to have spoken to us in some way. Yes, He has spoken to us through what we call Natural Revelation (nature), but He has spoken to us in a more specific way, namely, through the Bible. The only thing that adequately answers all questions is the Bible, which came from God. He alone is the ultimate reality. He exists above time and space, yet He is working in the eternal now.
B. The Bible begins in a manner that discredits non-theistic beliefs.
1. Atheism
2. Agnosticism
3. Polytheism
4. Humanism
II. God created time as we know it.
A. The “beginning” is the start of the physical world, not the spiritual
1. Time as we know it began with the creation of the physical world
2. God exists eternally and had no beginning
Job 36:26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
I Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
B. The “beginning” is the start of real history, not myth.
Psalm 136
CONCLUSION:
Imagine a family of mice who live all their lives in a large piano. To them in their piano-world came the music of the instrument, filling all the dark spaces with sound and harmony. At first the mice were impressed by it. They drew comfort and wonder from the thought that there was Someone who made the music-invisible to them-yet close to them. They loved to think of the Great Player whom they could not see.
Then one day a daring young mouse climbed up part of the piano and returned very thoughtful. He had found out how the music was made. Wires were the secret; tightly stretched wires of graduated lengths which trembled and vibrated. They must revise all their old beliefs: none but the most conservative could any longer believe in the Unseen Player. Later, another explorer carried the explanation further. Hammers were now the secret, numbers of hammers dancing and leaping on the wires. This was a more complicated theory, but it all went to show that they lived in a purely mechanical and mathematical world. The Unseen Player came to be thought of as a myth. But the Pianist continued to play.
God is waiting for you to come to Him by faith. Do not fall prey to the damaging theory of evolution, but believe that it is God almighty that created all that is. You have a responsibility to Him. If you continue on your present path you will spend eternity away from Him in Hell. If you own up to your responsibility to the creator, you may have eternal life with Him in Heaven. Jesus Christ payed the price for us so that we can be with Him forever. Will you trust Him today?
Christian, have you been so influenced by popular culture that you believe evolution is a viable theory? Do you conduct your life in a manner more consistent with evolution or creation?
